A Revolution of Values
Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.
The title of my presentation is taken from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s sermon, "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence." In that sermon, preached on April 4, 1967 at the Riverside Church in New York - - one year to the day before King was murdered in Memphis - - Dr. King clarified the nature of the beast we were up against (both in 1967 and in 2013!). He said we were not just fighting against racism.
We were (and we are) fighting against a three-headed demon - - racism, militarism and capitalism (casino capitalism, extravagant out-of-control consumerism - - a neo-liberal, free market driven mentality)! Those three evils were and still are interrelated… and a failure to recognize that reality (King said) would cause us to keep spinning our wheels and wasting our energies, fighting the wrong battles… and fighting a losing battle!
Racism, militarism and capitalism are the foundation upon which our imperial mindset is built. Our nation was built on that foundation. Our impulse and insatiable desire for global control proceed from and are propelled by the interlocking nature of those three principles - - racism, militarism and capitalism! The Prison Industrial Complex is constructed on those three interlocking principles.
