Higher Achievement/Higher Graduation Rates: Not for Black Students
Gregory J. Marchant
Professor, Ball State University
This study asked the question, were 8th grade NAEP state achievement scores related to state graduation rates four years later? The thought is that higher achievement would translate into higher graduation rates, and that would be true across race and poverty categorizations. The relationship between achievement and graduation was evident for all racial and poverty groups, except one. For Black students, NAEP achievement scores were not related to graduation rates.
